High-purity indium

Currently, Russia does not produce metallic indium with a purity of 99.9999-99.99999% by weight. There is no technology and equipment for the controlled dispensing of high-purity metallic indium. Therefore, it is high time to develop the technology and equipment for the controlled dispensing of high-purity metallic indium in the form of bars weighing less than 50 g as well as in the form of granules.

Indium is a soft, malleable, silvery white and fusible metallic element, its atomic number being 49. In terms of chemical properties, indium is similar to aluminum and gallium but in appearance it resembles zinc.

Practical applications of indium:

  • It is used in microelectronics as an acceptor dopant for germanium and silicon.
  • It is used in the production of glass for LCD screens.
  • It serves as a component of fusible solder.
  • Occasionally indium is used for coating mirrors, in particular automobile headlights. The reflectivity of such mirrors is every bit as good as that of silver-coated mirrors, while on the other hand, their resistance to atmospheric conditions is much higher.
  • It is used as material for solar cells.
  • It can serve as luminescent material.
  • Indium arsenide is used as a high-temperature thermoelectric material of very high efficiency. Normally, 10% of indium phosphide is doped in order to increase the efficiency.
  • Isotopes of indium (111In and 113mIn) are used as radiopharmaceuticals.
  • An isotope of indium (115In) is used for detecting electron neutrinos with a threshold energy of about 120 keV: 115In+νe → 115Sn+e±2y

Giredmet OJSC is able to produce metallic indium of the following grades: In-000, In-0000, In with a purity of not less than 99.99999% by weight.
